"Let Me Call You Sweetheart"

by Billy Jones and Ernest Hare

Sheet Music Cover courtesy of the Lester Levy Collection This evergreen of all evergreens was written in 1910 by Beth Slater Whitson and Leo Friedman, the same songwriting team that gave us "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland" (written in 1904 to open a themepark named "Dreamland"). This performance was recorded for Brunswick in January of 1925 by the pair that called themselves the "Happiness Boys" on radio (since their sponsor was the Happiness Candy Stores it made sense). This is one of the few records they made together that didn't have lots of jovial banter thrown in - the song was sung without monkeyshine, and though maudelin it's quite effective. The presence of the vibraphone, an instrument that would be featured heavily on records through the late 20s and early 30s, makes a well-recorded acoustic appearance here. The disc from which this was sampled was in great shape, being played only a few times by its original owner, and only needed a few clicks and pops removed.
