"Sweet California"

by Bob Haring and his Orchestra

One of the three "house bands" at Cameo records (Arthur Lange and Paul Van Loan were the other two), Bob Haring probably recorded more for this label in the 20's than most artists did for their entire career. Here, on a side recorded on October 13 of 1924, his band jazzifies a tune written by Jack Harrington (also wrote lyrics for "Finky The Caveman" in 1921) and someone with the last name of Lauria (about whom I have not been able to find out anything). This was the "B" side of the record, so it didn't get played much, and therefore I didn't have to do as much surface noise reduction as I would otherwise. You can actually hear the subtleties of the banjo here. It shows that the recording engineers at Cameo had some skill.
