"Ten Little Bottles"

by Jack Norworth

This is not the comedy bit that Johnny Bond became known for in the 60's, but an earlier song with the same title. It's one of the merrier songs to emerge from the introduction of Prohibition. Co-written by James Monaco (music, also co-wrote "You Made Me Love You" and "Row Row Row") and Ballard MacDonald (lyrics, co-wrote "Beautiful Ohio" and "Back Home in Indiana"), this song was introduced in 1920 and became instantly popular. Bert Williams did an exceptional version of it (available on CD). Jack Norworth, the guy who wrote the lyrics to "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" (and was married to Nora Bayes for a while - a feat of possibly equal stature!), recorded his version for Pathe shortly after the song's publication. Some groove noise is evident, common with Pathe discs, but on the whole it's a very enjoyable little record.
