"Baby Blue Eyes"

by the Stevens Trio

Ernest L. Stevens, serving as musical director for Edison Labs in the early 20s, performed as a solo pianist for the label and also had his own trio record some sides. Most of their fox-trot sides sounded very much like this, with the same brisk two-beat rhythm, but within the confines of their narrowly-defined style it is a joyous sound. The tune the perform on this side, recorded on December 2 of 1922, was written by Walter Hirsch (co-wrote "Deed I Do" and "No Reason at All"), George Jessel (actor and performer of legendary stature, also wrote several songs including "How I Laugh When I Think How I Cried Over You"), and Jesse Greer (wrote for many Broadway shows including "Earl Carroll's Vanities of 1928", also wrote "Kitty from Kansas City" and "Flaperette"). The record from which this was sampled was in very nice shape visually but had some crackle problems, remedied nicely by the ClickRepair software.
