"Because I Love You"

by the Challenge Dance Orchestra

With a generic name like "Challenge Dance Orchestra," this Sears-Roebuck issue begs the question of who's band is really playing on this record. It turns out the same master was issued on the Champion label, as the "Georgia Collegians," but it was the Gennett issue that carried the real name of Willie Creager as bandleader. It was recorded at the Richmond Indiana studios on October 2 of 1926, using Gennett's electric recording process (read: distorted). Nice ensemble passages here though there are no solos. The vocalist is uncredited but discographies reveal the singer as being Leroy Montesanto (thanks to Luis for providing that information). The disc from which this sample was taken had been abused heavily, and it took a few tries to get a decent-sounding sample. The first thirty seconds are the worst, and it gets better after that. This will certainly do until a better copy is found.
