"Ballet Music From Rosemunde"

by Raoul Vidas

Hungarian violinist Raoul Vidas, of the London String Quartet, was mentioned in the New York Times of October of 1920 as follows: "he has not made the impression here that his exceptional talent and musical equipment would warrant." On this record, waxed by Columbia on July 9 of 1920, he performed a composition by fellow violinist Fritz Kreisler who had adapted the theme from Franz Schubert's "Rosamunde, Fürstin von Cypern." Walter H. Golde, frequently the accompanist for Mischa Elman when he recorded for Victor, plays the beautifully understated piano behind Vidas. Columbia's recording engineers had every right to be proud of this waxing, as it has nice presence without being overly distant in the quiet parts. The record you'll hear was treated nicely by its original owner and only shows wear in the louder parts toward the end. After crackle is removed, it sounds like new.
