Before this Persian city became a political hot-potato, it was a distant place that got heavily romanticized (along with most other things Arabic) in the early 1920s. This song, written by the songwriting team of Jack Yellen and Milton Ager (the same pair that would
give us "Crazy Words, Crazy Tune" and "I Wonder What's Become of Sally"), proved a minor hit and was recorded many times in 1924. This was the version for Cameo, recorded on July 16 of that year, by the venerable Bob Haring band - not much is known about this outfit,
except that it seldom appeared outside of the Cameo recording studio. The recording has some interesting sonic qualities, with some of the room ambience being evident and the solo instruments being nicely close to the horn - the recording engineers did some good work
on this one. The record itself was played on some unforgiving equipment once or twice, so there was some heavy groove damage in the first ten seconds (as you will hear), but it smooths out after that.
