"Danse Arlequin"

by Shirley Spaulding

Recorded on January 7 of 1921 for Edison Labs, who thought enough of the tune to issue it on both disc and cylinder, this spirited tune was written by Joe Morley, one of the legends of late 19th century banjo in Europe. Not too much is known about Shirley Spaulding other than her being Bill Bowen's star pupil. This is a great little piece, though certainly hard to categorize: Edison issued it in their "light classical" series which it isn't really. The disc was loved in its time, and you can hear the wear on the louder notes, but it was in nice shape other than that. A light once-over with noise reduction took care of what rumble and hiss there was on this etched-label pressing.
